MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – Seven establishments in Muskegon County sold alcohol to minors over the weekend during a Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office decoy operation, authorities said, and now those businesses will be referred to the state’s Liquor License Commission for review. Muskegon County Sheriff’s Lt. Shane Brown said the weekend’s sting that started Friday, Aug. 22, was the third in the county and “we will be running more. “Clerks that sold liquor to the minor patrons did receive civil infractions and must pay a fine, Brown said. Brown said the process works like this: “The clerks are cited for a civil infraction, which does not carry any potential for jail time. There is a fine, but it is not a criminal conviction,” he said. “The businesses where the alcohol was sold to the decoy will be referred to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission through an LCC violation report form. It’s not a citation, but they will face financial penalties and repeat offenders can face stiffer penalties as well as suspension of their license to sell. The LCC would be the governing authority for the businesses. “Fines can be up to $1000 for the violating businesses. Penalties can include just a fine, fees and suspensions or a complete revocation of the liquor license.
